Your Questions About Scuba Diving Lessons

Jenny asks…
is it necessary to be a good swimmer in order to go scuba diving?
im a really bad swimmer, I can only do doggy style swim. would this be a problem if I want to try taking scuba lessons?
Tom Trindell answers:
To pass the PADI certifications (I don’t know the exact requirements for other agencies), there are two swimming tests:
–a 10 minute tread/float/drownproofing
–a 200 yd swim (not timed) or 300 yd mask, fins, snorkle swim (not timed). It is the instructors choice as to which to do.
From a safety aspect, you will be around water. It is just good practice to know how to swim to at least save yourself if you end up in the water accidently.
From a scuba diving aspect, the swimming motion has nothing to do with the scuba motion. In swimming you use your arms to pull you through the water. In scuba diving using your arms is a waste of energy. You use your legs to generate propulsion from the fins. Even to the point that it is a nice slow flutter kick in scuba diving instead of the rapid kick in swimming.
As I have told many people, for me to teach you how to scuba dive, you need to be comfortable in the water and underwater. Most people that don’t know how to swim are not comfortable in both of those situations.

Charles asks…
Is it safe to go scuba diving with glandular fever?
I have glandular fever and it’s been around 7 months, ITS NEVER GOING AWAY.
I plan on taking scuba diving lessons this coming summer (already paid and everything),
and was wondering whether it would be safe or not.
I mainly just have a sore throat, little bit of block nose and phlegm and thats it.
And does anyone know how to get rid of glandular fever?
I know the basic recipe is to rest and eat well but that aint happening with my life cause i suck.
Thanks in advance!
Tom Trindell answers:
A doctor would be in the best position to determine if it is safe for you or not, but anything that causes airway blockage does not mix well with diving.
Regardless of its safety for you, it is definitely NOT safe for the other individuals in your class since there is a chance that you could infect others with your disease.
You shouldn’t be in class until you have recovered from your illness.

William asks…
where is a great place for scuba diving lessons to go with my boyfriend in Galway Ireland?
helpppp, i dont kno much bout ireland but it is where my hometown is, just never been there so i want to take me and my boyfriend there for our both first time!
i heard their coral reefs are nice there,
well i need some advise on where to go for scuba diving lessons with an instructor
Tom Trindell answers:
I’m about 80% sure there is no scuba diving place in Galway, nor is there coral reefs.
If you’re interested in water sports in general, then the best place to go in Galway would be Salthill. There is an impressive diving board in the summer, and a water park if you have kids.
