Your Questions About Scuba Diving In Hawaii

Linda asks…

I want to scuba dive while in Hawaii?

What’s the process? Certificates? I’m 17,
And a good place to go near Honolulu?

Tom Trindell answers:

If you want to make the most of your vacation, do your academics and pool dives at a PADI dive shop nearest you that you also feel comfortable with. Being 17, you will also have to have your parents consent. There is also a medical questionnaire that you will need to fill out. Let the dive shop know you’d like to take advantage of the referral program. You’ll do all your academics, pool dives and exams with that shop. That shop can then arrange for you to complete your open water check out dives in Hawaii at a PADI shop there. Once you’ve completed those dives you will be a certified open water diver. Doing it this way you won’t get stuck in class in Hawaii and will instead be out diving, making the most of your vacation.
For a list of PADI shops in your area visit the PADI site and use the shop locater tool. Http://www.padi.com/scuba/default.aspx

You can find the basic process here:http://www.padi.com/scuba/scuba-diving-guide/start-scuba-diving/scuba-certification-faq/default.aspx

You can find the medical questionnaire here:http://www.padi.com/english/common/courses/forms/pdf/10063-ver2-0.pdf

There is an online learning option for your academics but in my opinion, learning first hand in person from a qualified Instructor will lead to less problems if you don’t understand material. You can ask and get immediate answers with hands on Instruction.

Lisa asks…

Shark Cage Diving in Hawaii !!!?

Has anyone ever gone to one and was it worth going to ??? Which would you perfer scuba diving or shark cage diving and why ?? thanks :D

Tom Trindell answers:

I have never gone shark cage diving and never will but I do go scuba diving all the time.

The number one reason why I would not promote shark cage diving is how they do it, it is stupid and barbaric. The put you guys in a cage right next to a boat, throw chum around to attract sharks, then throw a chunk of meat tied to a rope to get the shark right next to you. Sounds alright at first until you realize that when sharks are accustomed to humans being around while they are feeding, this actually increases the chance of a human being bit by a shark in that area and not by mistaken identity.

Scuba diving on the other hand you can move around at your pace and not disturb the ecosystem and see sharks in their actual habitat and see how peaceful they actually are. I have been scuba diving for many years and never have I seen a shark attack some one unless the person is doing something stupid to it.

I do not mean to come of as a hard headed guy, but anyways have lots of lots of lots of fun!!!! And make sure that you are safe in what ever you do.

Sharon asks…

imagine you are in hawaii and plan to go scuba diving.?

With your scuba apparatus, you can maintain normal atmospheric pressure even while driving to great depths. As you swim among the schools of fish and coral formations, you notice a native hawaiian diver searching the bottom for large oysters. he is not wearing any diving gear – only a pair of shorts! Assuming both you and the native hawaiian diver have a lung volume of .065 m^3 at the surface (surface air temp = 295K), and that air is an ideal gas, how much more volume will your lungs be holding at a depth of 39 ft than the lungs of the native diver? (Pressure = 2.325 atm, temperature = 290 K.)

Tom Trindell answers:

If you presume that the muscles of the chest are in no way preventing the air from compressing in the native diver’s chest, his air would shrink to 1/2.325 of its original volume.
The temperature would not be relevant because in both cases the air would heat to body temperature not the water temperature around you.

Given the depth is 39 feet I am calculating that the pressure is the absolute pressure rather than the overpressure at that depth.

So his volume is 1/2.325 * 0.065 m^3

your volume is 0.065 m^3
Subtract the two to see the difference.
