Your Questions About Scuba Diving Training

Maria asks…
what effect does nitrogen in sport supplements have on scuba divers under pressure?
I know that nitrogen buildup in a persons blood stream can cause decompression sickness / nitrogen narcosis at certain depths.I am currently using a nitrogen supplement for weight training.Does this mean i have to quit diving?
Tom Trindell answers:
No worries. It’s nitrogen that’s absorbed by the body under pressure, that’s the issue and I doubt you’re inhaling this supplement when you dive, but rather are ingesting it, on the surface. Big difference. Your stomach isn’t transferring gasses like your lungs do, to the bloodstream. If you’re really concerned still, you can always contact DAN, if you’re a member, and give them the details on the supplement. I think I’d be more concerned with any other ingredients in that supplement, than the nitrogen it may actually contain.

OFF TOPIC QUESTION: answer quickly before it gets deleted!?
I booked a flight toThailand last month after scuba diving in Mexico because it is so cheap to get certified as a PADI Diver there.
I cancelled it cos I got cold feet.
however I have just found a cheap flight to Utila which is a dirt cheap dive island in the Honduras and I can get there and back for a third of the price of flying to Thailand and live in a hut for ten bucks a night and eat for a pittance a day and get my Advanced Scuba Training.
I can just about afford a month there cos it’s way cheaper than living here.
Why am I hesitating.
If you can think of a good reason why I shouldn’t go please tell me.
Otherwise I need as many nudges as possible to push me intoaction and *just do it*
Thanks in advance!

Tom Trindell answers:
How is your question off topic? SCUBA is a water sport.
Normally I would say “go for it!” but considering the unstable political situation since the military coup that just took place in Honduras, this might not be the best time for an outlander to head there. You might want to check with your state department as to whether there could be travel restrictions coming up if the crisis isn’t resolved.

Your Questions About Scuba Diving Trips Cheap

James asks…
Belize. SCUBA. Recommendations?
Planning a dive trip for new year’s week. Belize looks good/cheap/easy to get to, etc. Need suggestions as to where to go, where NOT to go, and how to not get killed there. Thanks!
Tom Trindell answers:
Amrbergris Caye in Belize is a good place to go. You would fly into Belize City and take a puddle jumper over to the island. Turneffe Caye is another option. Don’t expect wild nightlife on either island but they are great for relaxation and diving. Most of the diving off Ambergris Caye is done around the Hol Chan Marine park. The Blue Hole is a good dive to say that you have done it but definitely watch out for nitrogen narcosis if you decide to do it. Deep dive training should be considered a must for that dive. The marine life is more established and you will see larger versions on parrot fish and if you are lucky pods of dolphins. Been to Belize several times and loved it.
Main mode of transportation on Ambergris Caye is golf carts by the way.

Betty asks…
Two 21 year-old guys in Costa Rica?
My buddy and me want to go to Costa Rica this January. Where should we stay? City? Hotel? What should we do? Please give us as many details as possible. We are interested in just about anything. Drinking, clubs, girls, scuba diving, snorkeling, rainforests, etc. We want this trip to be somewhat cheap too (no more than $1500 [each] for the entire trip)
Tom Trindell answers:
$1500 for the entire trip should be fairly easy to accomplish…
You can fly there for around $230 round trip from either Miami or Orlando. Other cities may be more. Check out Jet Blue, TACA, and Spirit Airlines.
This being your first trip, you may just want to go to Jaco. It is a very touresty town, but it can be fun. If you find someone touching your balls in the Beatle Bar, it’s a prostitute, and you should probably not indulge in that… Unless you want to be robbed.
The beach is fairly nice in Jaco, and there is good night life.
Generally, you need to be away from the clubs, girls, and night life if you want good experiences with scuba diving (carribean coast) rainforrests (south), etc. There is a zip line about 2 hours south of Jaco.
Just go, rent a car, and experience CR first hand…. Drive to Jaco, spend a few days there, then drive either North or South along the coast… You will see lots of different things to do.
Plane ticket: $250 round trip
Car rental: $200/week per person for a 4×4
Hotel: $10/night pp (sleeping cheap)
Food: $10 per day (eating cheap)

Mandy asks…
Where to draw the line with child support?
First of all, let me say straight up, I’m all in favour of fathers taking responsibility and paying child support for their children. Thats not the issue. My Question is: Where to draw the line? How much is too much?
My ex pays so much child support to his ex-wife and 4 children, that he doesnt have enough money to buy himself a cup of coffee. He struggles to contribute his share of our own living expenses, and often I am left to pay all the rent, food, bills etc, which is seriously impacting on my own financial stability. We live precariously, from pay to pay… Meanwhile, his ex enrols his kids in ballet, numerous sports, scuba diving, piano lessons, go-cart racing, holiday to England, now planning holiday to Bali… the list goes on and on. But he cant afford to take me on a date to the movies, or out for a cheap meal, or even away for the weekend… I always pay! But he’s happy to conrtibute to a holiday to Bali for his ex and 4 kids! Its just not fair!
Yes, I knew he had kids, and yes I expected he would pay child support… but this much? voluntarily? (there is no set amount by the courts, his ex-wife and kids live in another country).
When we first met, he was penniless, after his wife had taken him to the cleaners in divorce court, took the house, family business, car, everything. He was unemployed, and not paying child support. I supported him and helped him get back on his feet, and now he pays every spare cent to his ex. She just keeps demanding, and he gives in, out of guilt for leaving his kids I suppose.
But my generosity and support for him are being taken for granted, and Im not happy with the situation at all. I’ve tried to talk to him, tell him I’m broke and can’t afford to keep paying, and Im tired of never being able to go out together unless I pay for it. But he just gets defensive and angry at me, like Im trying to say his kids arent important. Of course they are! But is the ballet, scuba diving, motor car sports, trip to Bali really an essential requirement for them?
Add: And when we fly to their country (usually budged and saved by me) so he can see his kids, I have to stay in the hotel, whilst he takes his ex and kids out for dinner, because SHE wont allow me to be around them!
To The Mrs – my ex is not taking me on dates. lol. Im saying MY HUSBAND cannot afford to take me on a date, for dinner or even a cup of coffee!
to Kiss This… yes I know he has to pay child support. like i said earlier, thats not the issue. The issue is that his kids are TOTALLY SPOILT with expensive hobbies, toys, overseas holidays etc, much much more than the average child gets. And his greedy ex-wife just keeps on demanding more. And.. she’s already rich! She’s got the house, cars, business etc. Whilst my husband and I are totally struggling to keep up with it. All I want is for my husband to see reason.. and to not bankrupt us by his generosity to his kids.
Tom Trindell answers:
This is not an issue with child support, it’s an issue with your HUSBAND. Maybe you know this but it wasn’t clear until halfway through your question. If he’s not legally mandated to pay that much child support then you absolutely need to draw the line. I’d say it’s ultimatum time. Yes kids are important, but so are you. Clearly there is a happy balance, he just needs help to find it.

Your Questions About What Is Scuba Diving Equipment

Daniel asks…
I need help with diagramming infinitives?
I have these sentences that I can’t figure out, and I need to diagram them. I just need to know what the infinitive is and what part of speech (Adj, adv, or noun) it is. If it’s a noun, I need to know whether it’s the subject, direct object, PN, or Object of Preposition.
1)The teacher assigned the class to write a friendly letter.
2)We didn’t know what to do.
3)To finish will take us hours of hard work
4)I can hardly wait to wrap my hands around a cup of hot apple cider.
5)To rent scuba diving equipment requires a certificate.
I think I know 3 and 5, but I want to make sure. I really don’t know the other 3. Thanks!
Tom Trindell answers:
An infinitive is always a verb. It is the form of a verb which appears as the heading in a dictionary entry, and may or may not be prefixed by ‘to’. When the word ‘to’ appears, as it does in all your sentences, I would advise you to include it in the infinitive you give as your answer.
I don’t understand the concept of diagramming sentences, but the infinitives are:
1. To write
2. To do
3. To finish
4. To wrap
5. To rent

Linda asks…
thinking of going scuba diving in malta?
what is the age limit for it and how long do we stay for or do we choose.and general cost for scuba diving with full equipment
Tom Trindell answers:
You can’t go on a dive trip or rent/buy equipment without being certified. So I would suggest you get certified before your trip, or get certified while you’re in Malta. Also, some places will take non-certified people on a “discover scuba” trip, but I don’t know much about that. You might also consider “snuba” which involves an air hose that goes up to the boat, instead of a tank on your back – I’ve never done that, either, but I don’t think certification is required for it.
There are several certifying bodies. I got mine through PADI (www.padi.com) and they require you to be at least 10 years old, but if you’re 10-14 you’ll get a junior certification (which you can upgrade to an adult certification after turning 15). I think the certification cost me about $350 including equipment rental, admission to the place we did the diving, etc.
Costs vary. In Costa Rica I think we paid about $60 per dive for the dive trip, and close to that much for equipment rental. It’s also customary to tip your divemaster. We’re going to Hawaii this winter, and it’s more like $120 per dive.
Most people do 2 dives per day. Leave about 8am, back by noon. You can do that for as many days as you like. But if you’re talking about doing it for a week, then maybe look into a live-aboard boat trip instead, and you can probably get more dives in, or go to more interesting places.
Note: My costs are in US dollars.

If you could help me remember what this movie was that’d be great..?
It took place in the ocean. This couple wanted to go scuba diving. They went on a boat with other people who wanted to dive. However, when they got in the water, they were left behind. So they were stranded in the ocean with just their scuba diving equipment struggling to stay alive. I loved this movie but I forgot the name of it, as I would like to watch it again. Thank you.

Open Water
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374102/
“A young thirty-something couple goes on holiday to the Caribbean. One of the fun activities available to them is scuba diving off a reef several miles out. Due to a faulty head count taken by the dive boat crew, the couple is left behind in the open ocean. They find themselves drifting endlessly for hours on end, facing dehydration, saltwater sickness, jellyfish stings, and sharks! Although a boat and a large ship pass by within the couple’s view, neither sees them, and they are not discovered missing until the following morning when a member of the dive boat crew discovers their gear on the boat, and their hotel manager discovers they never returned to their room. Frantically a search is mounted by plane, boat, and helicopter, looking for the missing couple.”
